Shooting is really a part of training of military special forces but it is hardly the only element of training. Tactical training and the improvement of teamwork skills are crucial. Special forces practice these skills at military training grounds, but today there is a disparate alternative solution to train them with the use of virtual reality.

Virtuactions specialists invited the Russian tactical combat Airsoft Voron Team to try the arena for preparation for major all-Russian competitions “Zarya”.  The Voron Team consists of former and current special forces officers who took part in combat operations in hotspots.

The fighters performed the following combat missions:

– tactical movement of the assault group;

– clearing the perimeter;

– fighting inside the building;

– release of hostages;

– lay ambushes.

Voron Team forces soldiers in full uniform were on a training ground the size of a basketball court. Everyone had a VR helmet on their head, providing them a simulated level, weapons, obstacles, and all the participants involved in the battle. It was possible to display on the monitor or the tablet in the admin room the fight translation from each device of the participants.

In reality, the teams moved around the training ground performing tasks in groups of two, running from room to room, clearing perimeters, detecting enemies and destroying them. Participants moved freely without any restrictions in their actions. They jumped, ran, crawled, fired from various positions and easily interacted with each other. In the virtual fight they used weapons to solve combat tasks. The accuracy and recoil when shooting correspond to real ones.

In the training 10 people were involved, they were divided into two teams.

The logic of the game is near to the work specifics of special forces. The arena operator can set several game options, for example, assault, the siege of the building and hostage release. The polygon layout is uploaded to virtual reality glasses via the Internet by means of a remote server. The room is equipped with powerful routers distributing Internet via wi-fi, which provides high-quality fast battle without delays. The main device is Oculus Quest headset, improved by the developer, the upgrade affected the batteries and helmet balancing.

Spending some days in Cyberaction Arena, Voron Team fighters noted that the fight in the arena can become the planned stage of preparation of military exercises. The hallmark is the absence of wires, just free movements providing the conditions close to a real fight. Besides, the participants also note the high return and response of the equipment with the minimal delay. The developers took into account the wishes and recommendations of the participants, and in the nearest future they will implement them in the new version of the arena.

The next step in the development of virtual reality fights.

According to the developer, the arena can be designed for any  type of room and can give the development of working out special operations when freeing hostages or storming  a building. The level can be designed with high accuracy and within a short period of time. Such conditions allow to simulate any scenario of a special operation in the conditions close to real ones, which in its turn make it possible to avoid human casualties.

In the future, programmers are going to use the new Oculus Quest model, which is many times better in many characteristics of the first version. Among new options there can be the possibility to train on the open spaces with the higher quality of picture and tracking.

Different countries such as the United States, Great Britain, Israel, Russia have already implemented virtual actions training. The army is at the origin of the majority of modern technologies, including computer vision, drones, virtual and mixed reality helmets, and whatnot. For many years, private business could not compare their investments in research and development with the forces of different countries. The key aspect of technology implementation is the conditions that are close to real ones, saving time to train a soldier and the low cost of implementation in the army.

Thus, the US army uses Microsoft HoloLens 2 in its training. The device works perfectly, the soldiers perform exercises but the cost of the helmet and software is many times higher than its analogies on the market. The amount of the recent transaction was $480 million, which is an unprecedented case in the industry and exceeds all commercial projects known to date.
